Frequently asked questions

How long do solar panels last?

The truth is we are not yet sure as some solar panels that are 40 or more years old are still generating electricity, and that is obviously with old technology! However, most solar PV modules come with a 20+ year performance warranties which cover the life span of the FiT. We also offer a 5 year workmanship warranty on our installations, so you can be assured your work will be of the highest standard.

Am I charged VAT?

VAT is chargeable at a reduced rate of 5% for a system generating electricity for personal use, however if the electricity is for commercial use, the rate is 20%.

Do I require an Energy Performance Certificate?

In order to obtain the higher rate FiT the building that will be using the electricity generated by a solar PV system must has an EPC rating of D or above. However, this assessment can be done after the solar PV system has been installed, which often brings a buildings rating up quite a lot. From December 2012 schools will not require EPCs to obtain the higher FiT rate.

Is tax payable on any FiT income?

No, the Feed-In-Tariff rate is completely tax free –for both payments received for generation and exporting of electricity.

Will solar panels work in the winter?

Yes, they work using daylight and can sometimes be at their most efficient on a clear cold winter’s day.

How long does the installation take?

Depending on how many panels are being installed, a small job can take be done in one days. Larger installations may take up to a couple of weeks.

Do solar panels affect house sales?

According to the Energy Saving Trust, a home with PV panels sells 30% faster than a home without them.

Do I need planning permission?

No, planning permission is not required unless it is for a listed building or in a place of outstanding natural beauty. Find out more here.

Is maintenance needed on solar PV module?

No, there are no moving parts to a PV module or inverter, so no regular maintenance is necessary.

How well do Solar PV panels work?

The effectiveness of a solar array is dependent on a number of factors, one of which is the intensity of the photons or light energy it receives. The modules operate using direct sunlight and diffused solar radiation, which is light that has been spread out in the atmosphere by dust and water particles. Therefore a clear sunny day is not necessary for a solar PV system to function, they are able to generate electricity all year round throughout most weather conditions.

The modules work with temperature co-efficiency, meaning they work better when cooler. If the modules heat up too much their efficiency reduces, therefore they can work just as well, if not better, on an overcast day covering a strong sun or a bright cold winter’s day as they can in the middle of a hot clear summer’s day.

What happens in a power cut?

Due to necessary safety regulations, you are unable to continue generating your own electricity during a power cut. This is to protect anyone working to repair the national grid from receiving an electric shock which may be caused if you are exporting electricity whilst the grid is being worked on.

If you do experience a power cut, the inverter will shut down immediately and only begin to generate electricity again once it receives an appropriate electrical signal from the grid. You do not need to touch any part of the installation for this to happen, it operates completely independently and safely.

By becoming an approved installer under the MCS Scheme, Williams Renewables has been recognised for its first rate method of working, including everything from designing the most appropriate system for the customer, to ensuring every installation completed to the highest possible standard.

The RECC assurance scheme was set up by the Renewable Energy Association. It aims to guarantee a high quality experience for consumers wishing to buy or lease small generation units for their home, for a community building or for a small business. RECC membership is a sign that the supplier has agreed to abide by the high standards set out in their consumer code. The RECC logo is a symbol of professional excellence.

IWA is a market leading insurance provider for the construction industry, backed by Elite Insurance Ltd and regulated by the FSA. By work with IWA, this provides Williams Renewables customers with third-party cover and 100% reassurance that should anything go wrong, they are covered. IWA are very selective over who they work with and agreed to insure Williams Renewables following an audit and taking references from our suppliers.

Williams Renewables have been selected, trained and certified by REC as a Solar Professional installation company. We have been recognised as a company with the proven expertise and experience in installing solar solutions that REC have given us their stamp of approval. It identifies us as a company that follows the highest technical and safety standards.

Williams Renewables are able to offer an extended warranty on REC modules for roof mounted systems up to a maximum 100 kWp. You would receive a 10+2 year product warranty in addition to REC’s 25 year linear performance warranty.

REC is a leading vertically integrated player in the solar energy industry. Ranked amongst the worlds largest producers of polysilicon and wafers for solar applications and a rapidly growing manufacturer of solar cells and modules.

REC also engages in project development activities in selected PV segments. Founded in Norway in 1996, REC is an international solar company, employing about 3700 people worldwide with revenues more than EUR 1.7 billion in 2011.

CSCS was set up in the mid-90s with the aim of improving site workers’ competence to reduce accidents and drive up on-site efficiencies.

The Scheme keeps a database of those working in construction that achieve, or can demonstrate they have already attained an agreed level of occupational competence.

Successful applicants are issued with a card giving them a means of identification and proof of their achievements.

Cards are increasingly demanded as evidence of occupational competence by contractors, public and private clients and others, and today there are over 1.7 million cards in circulation.

Smas Worksafe is a prominent provider of SSIP schemes in the UK, they specialise in assisting businesses in obtaining complete SSIP certification, acknowledged by numerous organisations nationwide.

With this accreditation, Williams Renewables has demonstrated the correct commitment to best practice in Health & Safety and beyond.

Frequently asked questions

Photovoltaics – what does it mean?
+

The term ‘photovoltaic’ means the direct conversion of light into electrical energy using solar cells. In simple terms, the suns light travels through the atmosphere hitting the solar cells and creating electricity – it’s that simple!

In order to generate a sufficient amount of power, or ‘wattage’, multiple panels (otherwise known as ‘modules’) are connected together in ‘strings’ to create an ‘array’.

An array can be made up from as little as 3 modules upwards. Modules vary in wattage output, however we tend to use between 435-450W modules.

Regular maintenance is strongly advised to ensure the system is working as efficiently as possible. The amount of maintenance will depend on the system size.
